Help us to rebuild the lives of people affected by bereavement or a life-changing illness
What we do
The Dove Service is a charity founded in 1984 by Dr. Linda Machin. We work across Staffordshire and South Cheshire. To find out more about where we came from click here.
The Dove Listens...
The Dove Service offers counselling and support to those affected by bereavement, significant loss or life changing illness.
Our counselling services provide a safe, confidential environment to explore the emotional aspects of loss.
It can help to talk.
We offer counselling sessions at the Dudson Centre in Hanley and at various outreach centres across Staffordshire and South Cheshire, which helps us to get closer to our clients.
The Dove Informs...
The Dove Service also provides training for issues around bereavement, loss, life changing illness, the emotions of grief, and other topics.
Our training can be provided to professionals, adults, children and young people.
We can deliver training out in the community. Find out more about training and mentoring.
Open to all...
We provide our services to adults, children and young people, to couples, families and part families. Anyone can benefit.

Immediate Support
If required, we can provide immediate support for anyone who needs it. Telephone us, or drop in to our Head Office in Hanley and we aim to see you immediately, or within an hour.
The Waiting List
If you access our services you can help us keep waiting times to a minimum by:
- Informing us of the best way to contact you to offer an appointment
- Providing an accurate contact number where we can reach you during the day
- Informing us immediately of any changes to your contact details
- Ensuring that the times you tell us you can come for counselling each week are realistic
- Letting us know if you decide counselling is not for you so that we can remove you from the list and offer your place to someone else
Our Counsellors
All of our counsellors have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check and abide by the Ethical Framework of Good Practice (BACP 2007) and the Dove Service is an organisational member of this professional body. We are an inclusive service; our counsellors are sensitive to the needs of different members of our community.
Donations
We are grateful for, and welcome, financial support from individuals, companies and others, as well as any offer of goods, services or voluntary support. For further information about how you can contribute, please visit the Get Involved section of this website.
Gift Aid it!
We are a registered charity and receive some funding from statutory bodies however, this is not sufficient to meet all the needs of our clients. We are very grateful for donations, which for tax payers can be Gift Aided. This means that the tax man contributes an extra 28% of the value of your donation at no extra cost to you.
